Badia a Coltibuono, Chianti Classico

Badia a Coltibuono has been producing wine for over 1000 years and they’re bloody good at it! The current family owners acquired the property in 1810 and have been modernising and diversifying ever since. Sustainable farming is at the heart of all they do, maintaining over 700 ha of organic forest along with their award-winning olive groves. They have around 70ha of vineyards and 20 ha of olive groves all of which has been certified organic since 2000.

This Chianti Classico is one of the first wines to ever be produced in Tuscany and this history and tradition can be tasted in every bottle. A sangiovese dominated blend that is aged for 12 months in French and Austrian Oak barrels to smooth out the already fine tannins and add some smoky cherry and tobacco notes. High quality fruit gives a very intense red cherry, black pepper and a floral note that explains why Chianti is so popular the world over.

Food Pairing – it seems obvious to say but pizza and tomato-based pasta are sure fire winners here and if you have any truffle lying about, even better. Tuscany has a local favourite ‘Bistecca alla Fiorentina’ which is a huge T-bone steak from local Chianina cattle that all you carnivores will love!

What Does ‘Classico’ Mean?
As with most things on European wine labels it refers to a geographical location. The ‘classico’ region is the centre, the original, the first and the best grape growing area. It was originally designated a separate region by the Medici in 1716 and has historically been where the best grapes are grown.
